STEVE SCHAPIRO: AMERICAN EDGE

Venue: “La Tinaia” Cultural Center - Sovicille

The largest anthological exhibition ever organized in Italy on the work of Steve Schapiro, one of the leading figures in 20th century photography.

The photo exhibition “American Edge” is a visual journey through intimate and powerful moments that shaped American cultural and social history in the 20th century. It is not just a photographic exhibition, but an immersive experience that allows visitors to relive pivotal moments through the lens of Steve Schapiro, a celebrated American photojournalist who captured events that defined an era.
Each photograph tells a story, offering an unprecedented look at personalities who shaped our world. The images document the deep connection between Robert F. Kennedy and the American people during the presidential campaign, behind-the-scenes moments at Harlem's Apollo Theater, a symbol of African-American culture, and Robert De Niro portrayed on the set of “Taxi Driver.”

Also represented are key stages of the civil rights struggle, such as the march from Selma to Montgomery led by Martin Luther King Jr, and a young Cassius Clay, future Muhammad Ali, portrayed in his mother's living room as he reveals his determination even before he became a legend.
The exhibition also explores the link between art and music with David Bowie portrayed with a book about Buster Keaton or relaxed on the set of “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” The exhibition culminates with vibrant images of Andy Warhol, his entourage at glittering parties and his iconic collaboration with the Velvet Underground.

“I am constantly looking for the image that captures the spirit of the person, “ Schapiro said.” At the same time, as a photojournalist, I try to create images that allow people to understand the scope of current news.”
This duality in his approach, between the search for individual essence and historical testimony, shines through sharply in all his work.

Special thanks to Luca Venturi for making Our collaboration possible for this unforgettable edition as well.
